Bunny Chow

Bunny Chow is a Durban Indian curry served inside a hollowed-out loaf of bread. It's a truly unique and satisfying street food experience.

  1. Heat oil in a pot and sauté the onions until golden brown.
  2. Add the curry powder, turmeric powder, and garam masala. Sauté for a minute.
  3. Add the meat and brown it on all sides.
  4. Add the tomatoes, green chilies, potatoes, and salt. Cook until the meat is tender and the potatoes are cooked through. Add water if needed to prevent sticking.
  5. Cut the loaf of bread in half or into quarters, depending on how many servings you want. Hollow out the bread, keeping the crust intact.
  6. Fill the hollowed bread with the curry.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot.

Gatsby

The Gatsby is a Cape Town institution – a massive sandwich filled with slap chips, polony (or other fillings), and loads of sauces. Perfect for sharing!

  3. Layer the slap chips generously on the bottom half.
  4. Add the polony slices on top of the chips.
  5. If using, add cheese slices, lettuce, and tomato slices.
  6. Drizzle generously with tomato sauce and peri-peri sauce.
  7. Place the top half of the roll over the fillings.
  8. Cut the Gatsby into smaller portions for easier sharing.

  4. Place cheese slices on top.
  5. Add a fried egg if desired.
  6. Spoon generous amounts of atchar over the fillings.
  7. Drizzle with tomato sauce, mayonnaise, and chili sauce.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy the overloaded, flavorful Kota!

Vetkoek

  2. Add the warm water and mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. Heat oil in a deep pot or fryer to about 180°C (350°F).
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into small balls.
  7. Gently flatten each ball into a round disc.
  8. Carefully drop the vetkoek into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides.
  9. Remove the vetkoek and drain on paper towels.
  10. Cut a slit in each vetkoek and fill with your desired filling.
